Overview of Services

The Developmental Tissue Bank core facility helps researchers to access human prenatal tissue from clinical routine abortions. We provide defined tissue prepared according to the needs of the researcher. We also assist the researcher with applications for required legal permits, to minimize the efforts needed to use this unique material for experimental and clinical research.

We have experience of research on human prenatal tissue since more than 30 years. We are located at the Karolinska university hospital in Solna, BioClinicum, but we also have a facility in Neo outside Karolinska university hospital in Huddinge.

As our core service, we organize rapid transfer of the tissue from the clinic to our labs in Huddinge or Solna, we determine the age using clinical data and anatomical landmarks, and identify tissue and organs of interest in these samples. The tissue is prepared according to the

We provide tissue through a “subscription” system. As our client, you sign up for 6 months at a time. The fee includes all preparation including initial planning with the client, help to apply for ethical permit, discussions on tissue dissection and preparation, and delivery of at least 8 samples per 6 months period. The tissue is delivered outside one of our labs (day-time pick-up), or stored in the core facility according to agreements. The tissue is either delivered fresh in hibernation medium or PBS, frozen in OCT in isopentane-dry ice slurry and stored at -80°C, frozen in RNAlater and stored at -20°C, or fixed in 4%PFA.

As extra service (separate fees) we can prepare cell homogenates for flow cytometry or single cell RNA sequencing with delivery to other core facilities, perform plating of primary cultures, arrange with paraffin-embedding of fixed tissue, as well as other arrangements on request.
